The group, who provide nursing and care services throughout Northern Ireland, recognise females as making up 80% of their vital 937 strong workforce, with 20% of those in the menopausal age range of 45-55 years old.
Although not legally required, the group management team sought to develop the policy with the subject being highlighted within the media and by internal staff. The new policy provides Managers with a 4 step procedure to follow to help employees deal with symptoms whilst at work. The procedure includes the option to make adjustments for employees within the workplace, ongoing support checks and guidance to access further help.
With the launch of this policy, the group are providing all employees with access to an e-learning course through their online training system, Optimum Inspire, to learn and understand how the menopause affects women both in and outside the workplace.
HR Manager, Lucy McCreery commented, “The menopause can be a difficult time for some women, especially whilst at work, we don’t want this to be a ‘silent issue’. We want to support our staff to talk to us to see how we can help them at work.”
In addition, the group have signed the Menopause Workplace Pledge and have appointed a Menopause Champion who will be a point of contact to staff affected by the menopause should they not feel comfortable talking to their Manager.
An advocate for menopause support within the workplace, Connie Mitchell, Home Manager stated, “I am delighted to work within a Company who are leading the way in supporting myself and colleagues who are experiencing menopause symptoms. We spend so much time in our workplace, it is essential to speak up and support each other as we all manage different symptoms both physically and mentally. I am delighted to see this policy launched to support so many in our workplace and wider as this impacts on family and loved ones.”
